AmCham Slovakia´s statement on the murder of Ján Kuciak

The American Chamber of Commerce in the Slovak Republic (AmCham Slovakia) as one of the signatories of the Rule of Law Initiative would like to first of all express its deepest condolences to the families of the investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová.

As a representative of 330 member companies from 27 countries around the world which employ more than 100 000 people in Slovakia, AmCham is deeply concerned about the current situation which is unprecedented in the history of Slovakia.

A murder of an investigative journalist, which, according to many public officials, is closely connected with his profession, is an unprecedented attack on the freedom of media.

AmCham in cooperation with 14 employers´ organizations and chambers of commerce united in the Rule of Law Initiative has for a long time pointed to the necessity of enforcing the rule of law and fight against corruption which has a negative effect not only on the business environment.

Therefore we call for the maximum effort of relevant public authorities to investigate and resolve this case as well as a transparent way of informing the general public. The public trust in state authorities is at stake which is something that cannot be gambled with.
