Those six years gave me a chance to experience and observe twelve EU Member States in conducting their respective Presidencies in the Council of the EU, and to see, among other things, how the Presidency’s role had changed with the Lisbon Treaty, what the Presidency should do and what should be avoided.

The Treaties do not give any guidelines regarding how the Presidency should be conducted. Indeed, the word “presidency” is found in only two articles in the treaty texts.
